Metal, You Say?

Aaron Tieger, amazing poet and publisher, has compiled the following metal mix. I approve.

“This is the mix I made this weekend for a nephew who had had practically zero exposure to the fine art of metal.

Caught In A Mosh (Anthrax)
Ace Of Spades (Motörhead)
Surf Nicaragua (Sacred Reich)
Fuck You (Overkill)
Flight of Icarus (Iron Maiden)
Astronomy Domine (Voivod)
Surprise! You’re Dead! (Faith No More)
The Toxic Waltz (Exodus)
Raging Waters (Testament)
Peace Sells (Megadeth)
The Usurper (Celtic Frost)
Rainbow In the Dark (Dio)
Animal (Fuck Like a Beast) (W.A.S.P.)
Breaking the Law (Judas Priest)
Thundersteel (Riot)
Raining Blood (Slayer)
Suicide Solution (Ozzy Osbourne)
Hell’s Bells (AC/DC)
For Those About To Rock (AC/DC)

It was great fun to make – I had to do a lot of digging. Tony Robinson made the excellent suggestions of Overkill, Testament, and Riot. And I’d never really listened to Slayer or Celtic Frost before, and am much the better for having done so. I also got to revisit a lot of bands that didn’t make the cut – Venom, Metal Church, Armored Saint, Manowar, etc – and that was fun too.

I should point out that this general mix was supplemented by two additional discs: a Black Sabbath mix and a copy of Kill ‘Em All. If I had been working on a 90 minute tape I would have added more Anthrax (“I Am the Law” and “Antisocial” both got cut) and more Maiden (“Two Minutes to Midnight” and “Can I Play With Madness” and “Wasted Years”), as well as “Christian Woman” by Type O Negative. But overall I am pleased with this 1:16:46 of metal. My avuncular duties are fulfilled.”
